Reimei Kobashi, a pedestrian bridge in Chuo-ku, Tokyo, for which Hoshino Architects Inc. served as the Master Design Architect, has been shortlisted in the “Best Use of Light” category at the FRAME Awards 2025, an international award recognizing excellence in spatial and lighting design. The FRAME Awards 2025 attracted a diverse range of global submissions spanning retail, hospitality, residential, workplace, and cultural spaces. Assessed against criteria that highlight spatial quality, material articulation, and the creative deployment of light, Reimei Kobashi was particularly recognized for its lighting expression, earning its place in the “Best Use of Light” shortlist. — the Pedestrian Bridge “Reimei Kobashi” — Reimei Kobashi footbridge crosses the Asashio Canal in Tokyo with a soft arching design reminiscent of gentle waves rolling over the water’s surface. The continuous white structure of the bridge hovering above emphasizes the beauty of the waves using the subtle movement in the rhythm of the water’s surface. The light of the bridge cast onto the water’s surface tantalizes the imagination even more with a congregation of waves seeming to wash over one another. The lighting plan focused on the practicality of the lights as well as creating a landmark in this area of urban development, not only for people crossing the bridge but also for people from different points of view. The lighting fixtures installed in each of the components on both sides of the bridge are programmed to change colours slowly and gradually according to the season and the day of the week. By changing the rhythm of the lighting program for the top and bottom of the three-dimensional rippled shape, the different colour combinations are designed to create a variety of impressions. In this way, the nightscape of this newly developed area, where the number of residents is increasing, can be enjoyed daily for its momentary colourful combinations and movements.
